In Search of Atlantis, Egypt and its Enduring Mystery
Presented by Josh, and Ben…
In Plato’s Timaeus and Critias, the myth of Atlantis was first recorded, and its meaning has been fiercely debated ever since. Strabo records that Aristotle, Plato’s Academic successor, categorically denied the legend had any historical basis. According to Proclus, the often quoted Neo-Platonist of the 5th century CE, the story is both a spiritual allegory and a factual account of historical events. In the last century alone, Atlantis has been “found” more than a thousand times in a hundred different places, leading us to wonder whether we are asking the right questions. During this episode, we examine the curious creation mythology referred to as the “Building Texts” engraved upon the walls of the temple of Edfu in Upper Egypt as possible Egyptian sources for Plato’s famous narrative. In the second part of that study, we extend this exploration to include creation mythologies from around the world, comparing their themes to those found in Plato’s tale of the lost civilization of Atlantis.
